[Similarities: Co-exhibition of 6 Artists]

Similar, alike, or comparable. Similar people and things often find one another.

Groups may be identical or similar but they do not need to be the same. Those who are able to relate to each other stay together, but they can be different.

“Abstractionism” is not only extracting the elements of an object. It is the “refining” or “reflection” of the essence of an object. The focus of abstractionism is not only the meaning of the object (abstract presentation/low geometry) or the reaction to the object, it is the wide range of possibilities between the two.

Gon-Jer Wang
A Segment of The Universe16-12
Charcoal on straw board
104x76cm
2016

Wang Gon-jer’s sketchings look similar but each piece contains minute differences and different interpretations. Over the years, his use of charcoal, water colors, and oil paints with his dynamic brushstrokes have created intertwined works that evolved the harmony between form, color, and lines. He once described his own work as inheriting the modern Western painting styles post Cézanne infused with the natural images of Eastern ink paintings. His works are focused on the spirituality of religious emotions. The three aspects converge and present the artistic essence of East and West, completing the sprit of “local life”. The inner essence and external aesthetics inspire and continue to re-inspire the settings within.

Lu- Chia Chao
Sleepless conscious-5
Mixed media on wood panel
40x30x2.5 cm
2022

Over the years, the diverse abstract paintings of Chao Lu-chia have experimented with different colors and paintings and incorporated collages of different materials. She has always been dedicated to the environment around her and her own emotions, from which she derives the tones and themes of her paintings. The different lines connect and intertwine with each other, creating a complex and rich evolution of her paintings. The appearance of each period of her work may look fragmented, but within the foundation of her work, the idea of “similar or dissimilar, the same yet different” inspire different possibilities between the paintings, permeating, evolving, and existing together through her works. This is the modern creative spirit of “differences existing together”.

Chien-Jung Chen
Aircraft 17
Acrylics, mixed media, canvas
112 x 162 x3 cm
2018

Chen Chien-jung’s artistic journey and elements in his work are rather complex. By looking at the evolution of his work, it can be seen that his artistic journey and process are the central themes of his creativity. He plans his work before he creates but utilizes drafts of the scenes. In every setting, he creates overlapping images of “similar but different” creations through his experience. When the viewer explores the meaning, symbolism, or subtext of a certain image, it is continuously changed, distorted, or transformed by the overlapping shapes, colors, and lines. Chen Chien-jung is a modern art warrior that challenges “visual concepts, behavioral changes, and artistic observations”.

Jui-Wen Tan
蒹Silver grass
Acrylics, mineral pigments on paper
60 × 83.5 cm
2021

Tan Jui-wen’s painting style is rather diverse and evolved. The topics of his work range from natural landscapes and urban settings to installations in Pier 2 made from local materials. From his recent series of paintings, “Manmade Landscapes” (2012), “Mirage” (2013), and “Topography Collection” (2015), his capturing of fleeting scenery from his life of living between cities and nature can be observed. In his “Mirage” series, he reflects the artistic aesthetics hidden within daily sights as if they were mirages. In other words, he extracts the “truth” behind everyday images.

Shao-Yen Chen
Red Flower
Acrylic on canvas
162x130cm
2021

Chen Shao-yen’s paintings created from diverse materials. He combines acrylic, charcoal, crayons, pastels, ballpoint pens, correction fluid, and sand paper to create soothing structures that combines organic materials, plants, and living organisms. The ever-changing settings and the deeply tactile serenity seem to be continuously growing and evolving, creating a dream-like spiritual garden.

The new experimental “Portraits of the Wanted” series takes socially meaningful appearances and transforms them into introspections of their hearts through burning and scoring, revealing the unknown. Chen Shao-yen moves between painting, photography, and different images to continue exploring the relationship between what is within and without.

Julia Hung

Julia Hung’s artworks are presented as the only three-dimensional pieces of this exhibition. Different from conventional and traditional sculptures, she makes her art intuitively without consciously planning the overall shape and structure. As Hung describes, she “uses crocheting techniques which she learned at a young age from her grandmother to carefully weave stiff metal fibers into silky, organic forms. Her net-like creations, which radiate warmth from every knotted strand of bright, translucent copper, exude a unique sense of space, as if encapsulating an entire self-sufficient microcosm. At the outset of the creative process, she simply follows her instincts, without a desired form in mind, weaving over and over in seemingly random fashion until each piece comes to life”.

As she meticulously weaves enameled copper wire, she explores through a sensation of familiarity, as if these afterimages from her memories shape the creations of ‘Déjà Vu’. By maneuvering through the construction, reverberation, and reformation of external materials, Hung invokes her inner thoughts and mysterious cosmography into sculptural forms.

Differences between living things create harmony and the perseverance of life. This has always been the way of life throughout history and the rule behind art.

This exhibition by “San Gallery” is based on the abstractionism of modern paintings. Creators from 6 different generations were carefully selected to turn “different objects co-existing” into creations that lean towards life, cities, and nature with organic meanings and symbolism. The artists use abstract imagery and dynamic lines to make diverse connections, observing and reflecting on the interactions between everything.
