Huihsuan Hsu
Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 1982. HuiHsuan Hsu is based in Taichung, and working as an artist and educator. In 2015, Hsu received her practice-led PhD from the School of Fine Art, Art History and Cultural Studies, University of Leeds, UK, majoring in video art and photography.
In her video works and research, Hsu contemplates the act of “seeing,” particularly focusing on visual experiences shaped by the hyper-speed or seemingly still pace of everyday temporal movements. Her practice explores the intersections of digital apparatuses, materiality, perception, and time. Her video works have been exhibited in the UK, Germany, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
After many years of working with video art and photography, Hsu has arrived at a pivotal moment in the evolution of creative media. This transition is deeply connected to the intrinsic properties of media, interwoven with life experiences, and involves a migration of ideas within personal creative practices. For HuiHsuan Hsu, engaging with digital tools is akin to a precise choreography, demanding meticulous attention and a restrained sensibility while maintaining clear, deliberate steps.
Conversely, painting for Hsu represents a ritual of encoding self-security. Through complex yet subtle abstract shapes, personal life experiences are folded, accumulated, and preservedwithin the canvas’s space. The creative process begins with the intuitive application of paint and oil, free from prior planning or sketches—like exploring through a fog. Brushes are layered repeatedly, space is developed from a blank surface, and affinities related to memory images gradually emerge on the canvas. Only then does Hsu find a moment to cease painting.
The meaningful titles of Hsu’s works serve as key scenes in short stories, offering guidance and insight. These titles, concrete yet poetically rich, function as distant points on a spectrum of abstract shapes, striving to cultivate an imaginative realm of ambiguous interpretation. Hsu’s paintings are like drifting, attentive companions—sometimes intimate and tender, at other times cold and distant. They whisper to contemporary viewers about the countless serendipitous encounters in life, the seemingly familiar narrative structures, and the cultural and conscious caches that exist beyond rational logic and knowledge.
In recent years, HuiHsuan Hsu’s paintings have been exhibited in Taiwan, Japan, and Italy through solo exhibitions, group shows, art fairs, and art competition joint exhibitions. It is anticipated that her works will continue to be presented in an even wider range of exhibition spaces in the future.
쉬후이쉔
1982년 대만 가오슝에서 태어난 쉬후이쉔(HuiHsuan Hsu)은 현재 타이중에 거주하며 작가이자 교육자로 활동하고 있다. 2015년, 영국 리즈 대학교(University of Leeds) 미술·미술사·문화연구 학부에서 비디오 아트와 사진을 전공하며 실기 중심 박사 학위를 취득했다.
비디오 작업과 연구에서 쉬는 ‘본다’는 행위에 대해 사유하며, 특히 일상 속 시간적 움직임의 초고속 또는 정지한 듯한 속도가 만들어내는 시각적 경험에 집중한다. 그녀의 작업은 디지털 장치, 물질성, 지각, 시간의 교차점을 탐구한다. 비디오 작품은 영국, 독일, 미국, 일본, 한국, 대만 등에서 전시되었다.
비디오 아트와 사진 작업을 오랫동안 지속한 후, 쉬는 창작 매체의 진화에서 중요한 전환점을 맞았다. 이 변화는 매체의 본질적 속성과 삶의 경험이 얽혀 있으며, 개인 창작 실천 속 아이디어의 이동과도 밀접히 연관된다. 그녀에게 디지털 도구를 다루는 일은 정교한 안무와 같으며, 명확하고 의도적인 단계를 유지하면서 세심한 주의와 절제된 감각을 요구한다.
반면, 쉬에게 회화는 자기 안정을 부호화하는 의식과도 같다. 복잡하면서도 미묘한 추상적 형태 속에 개인의 삶의 경험이 접히고, 쌓이며, 캔버스 공간 안에 보존된다. 창작 과정은 사전 계획이나 스케치 없이 직관적으로 물감과 오일을 올리는 것으로 시작되며, 이는 안개 속을 탐험하는 것과 같다. 붓질이 반복적으로 겹쳐지고, 빈 화면에서 공간이 확장되며, 기억 이미지와 관련된 친연성이 서서히 드러난다. 그렇게 해서 비로소 그녀는 붓을 멈출 순간을 찾는다.
쉬의 작품 제목은 짧은 이야기 속 주요 장면처럼 의미를 지니며, 방향과 통찰을 제공한다. 구체적이면서도 시적으로 풍부한 제목들은 추상적 형태의 스펙트럼 위 먼 지점처럼 기능하며, 모호한 해석의 상상 세계를 구축하려 한다. 그녀의 회화는 유영하는 주의 깊은 동반자와 같아, 때로는 친밀하고 다정하며, 때로는 차갑고 멀다. 그것들은 현대 관객에게 삶 속 무수한 우연한 만남, 익숙해 보이는 서사 구조, 그리고 이성적 논리와 지식을 넘어 존재하는 문화적·의식적 저장소에 대해 속삭인다.
최근 몇 년간 쉬후이쉔의 회화는 대만, 일본, 이탈리아에서 개인전, 단체전, 아트페어, 미술 공모전 공동전시를 통해 소개되었다. 앞으로 그녀의 작품은 더욱 다양한 전시 공간에서 계속 선보일 것으로 기대된다.
